BIOGRAPHY
Jade Yeo (b.1992) is a Singaporean artist who is largely engaged with concepts of metamorphosis, intimacy and domesticity. Informed by horror literature and film, her practice investigates the loss of distinction between the self and the Other, between subject and object. Her latest work fuses sculpture and photography to explore a possible kind of posthuman future. Jade holds a Diploma in Gerontological Management Studies from Temasek Polytechnic and a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts. She has been the recipient of the LASALLE College of the Arts Scholarship in 2013. She has exhibited locally as well as in Indonesia and China. |
STATEMENT
My current work is invoked by Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein: the monster-child of human manufacture, brought into the world with no regard for the consequences of its own desire, introduced into an environment for which it has little adaptive features. The idea of a creature in a domestic space raises questions about our ability to empathise, accept and care for these entities that are not quite like us. The world I would like to create exists somewhere between the one we know and one that is almost upon us. However, what I imagine is neither a purgatory future of ruin nor a brave new world of perfect scientific progress. Instead, I am focusing on the internal lives of the new creatures that might emerge, along with questions about the kinds of relationships that might come to light along side them. |
